The mission of the Gallery by the Lake is to increase our community’s appreciation and awareness of the value of visual arts. Our goals are to provide programs and services designed to educate and promote participation through gallery events, workshops, classes, and exhibitions.Gallery by the Lake’s focus is community involvement..
The Gallery had its humble beginnings as a small group of artists meeting to paint together in individual homes. In 1984, Anne Dentler, the founder, had a vision for this group to someday have its own home where artists would come together to share knowledge, experiences, camaraderie and exhibition of their art. That dream came to fruition in 1986 when local authorities were contacted to lease the old Central School in downtown Lake Charles. Other art entities soon found their way into the building as well.
After 5 years at Central School, this group of artists found a new home in an abandoned building at 106 West Pryce Street that formerly housed the Melody Music Company. Members enthusiastically embarked on renovating the building to accommodate a gallery, studio, framing facility and office. In 2008, as a result of the Downtown Development Authority’s incentive for tax credit investment in downtown Lake Charles, the building was expanded to include a new state-of-the art Creative Arts Center (CAC). This addition allowed the members to host internationally renowned art teachers for workshops as well as provide great space for student art shows and local educational art classes.
Sadly, our founder Anne Dentler passed away in 2017, and in 2019 the building was sold. The City of Lake Charles has warmly welcomed the Gallery by the Lake back into its fold by providing studio and classroom space in rooms 321 and 312 of the Central School Arts & Cultural Center at 809 Kirby St and lovely gallery space on the second floor of the Historic City Hall Arts & Cultural Center at 1001 Ryan Street.
The Gallery by the Lake regularly rotates original art through branches of Iberia Bank. Members participate annually in both Art Walk and Art Promenade, sponsored by the Southwest Louisiana Arts Council.
